The zebra danio (Danio rerio), also known as the zebrafish, is a small, hardy, freshwater fish popular in the aquarium trade and widely used in scientific research.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: Zebra danios have a sleek, torpedo-shaped body, typically growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length. They are easily recognized by the five to seven shimmering, horizontal, blue-purple stripes that run from their gills to their tail over a silver or gold body. Many color variations exist, including long-finned, golden, albino, and spotted "leopard" varieties, as well as genetically modified fluorescent GloFish.
  • Temperament: They are highly active, peaceful, and social fish. They are a schooling species and do best when kept in groups of at least six to prevent stress and fin-nipping behavior. They are diurnal (active during the day) and can be found swimming at all levels of the aquarium.
  • Habitat and Diet: Native to the freshwater streams, rivers, and rice paddies of South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan), zebra danios are omnivores. In the wild, they eat small insects, larvae, and crustaceans. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet of quality flake, frozen, and live foods.
  • Hardiness: They are known for their resilience and adaptability to a wide range of water conditions, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
  • Scientific Importance: Due to their rapid development, transparent embryos that develop externally, and genetic similarities to humans, zebra danios are an important and widely used vertebrate model organism in scientific research, including studies on genetics, development, oncology, and regenerative medicine.
