About Golden State Discus

Golden State Discus is a family-owned business fueled by a deep passion for the aquarium hobby. Founded by Doug Warner, a lifelong fish-keeping enthusiast with a particular love for Discus, Golden State Discus represents a return to Doug's roots. Alongside his wife, Lynda, Doug transitioned from a successful career in other industries to establish Aqua Life Aquarium in 1990. This venture quickly became a cornerstone of the aquarium hobby industry in Sacramento and Northern California, offering specialized freshwater and saltwater livestock, equipment, and comprehensive aquarium and pond services.

With Aqua Life Aquarium thriving, Doug and Lynda decided to embark on a new journey, focusing on what initially sparked Doug's interest in the aquarium hobby: Discus fish. Their search for a reliable, high-quality Discus supplier led them to Chris at Na Discus of Malaysia. After several unsuccessful attempts with other companies, this partnership marked a turning point for Golden State Discus. Today, they are proud to be the exclusive U.S. supplier of these exceptional Discus fish, delivering healthy, top-quality products consistently and on time.

FAQs

How will my Discus be shipped?

Your discus will be shipped by UPS Next Day Air, or you can request airport-to-airport shipping via Southwest Air Cargo. All fish are individually bagged four times with oxygen, and then all bags are wrapped in a catch-all bag to keep them tight and secure. Heat packs are used to keep your discus warm during transit. We also use styrofoam-lined boxes to ensure the most secure trip possible.

Are my Discus guaranteed?

We LOVE discus and want every single one to arrive swimming happily into your tank! That’s why we proudly offer our Live Arrival Guarantee—we guarantee your fish show up alive and looking great.

In the super-rare case something goes wrong (like a fish arrives DOA):

We’ll happily refund the full cost of that fish (shipping stays as-is, since we can’t control carrier adventures) or work with you on a replacement/credit. We’re on your side!

To make it quick and easy for everyone, here’s what we need:

•  Be home for the first delivery — We pack everything with care for fast transit, but if the carrier has to redeliver or leave it unattended, extra time in the box can be risky—so the guarantee applies only on that first attempt.

•  Let us know right away — Shoot an email to lynda@goldenstatediscus.com within 2 hours of getting your package. Include:

•  A quick 15-second video of the fish in the tank (so we can see what’s going on).

•  Your order number.

•  We’ll review it super fast and get back to you—usually with good news!

A couple quick notes:

We can’t cover issues from wrong addresses, missed pickups, or anything after the fish are safely in your hands (like acclimation hiccups). But if it’s on our end or shipping-related, we’ve got you!

What Happens If a Discus Arrives DOA? We’re Here to Help!

We’re truly sorry whenever a fish doesn’t make it—your happiness and healthy discus are what matter most to us at Golden State Discus. We take our Live Arrival Guarantee very seriously and always work hard to make things right quickly and fairly.

If a discus arrives deceased (DOA), please reach out right away (email lynda@goldenstatediscus.com within 2 hours of delivery with your 15-second video and order number, as outlined in our full guarantee). Once we confirm, we’ll offer these options to get you the full value of your order:

Option 1 — Priority Replacement Shipment (Our Top Recommendation!)

If we have the same discus (or a great comparable match) in stock, we’ll send a replacement on the next safe shipping day at no extra cost to you. This is the fastest way to get your beautiful fish home and swimming happily—most of our customers love this option!

Option 2 — Store Credit + Extra Bonus

Prefer to plan for a future order? We’ll issue a full store credit for the value of the lost fish, plus a nice bonus of your choice:

•  +10% extra added to your credit (more value for your next pick!), OR

•  50% off shipping on your next order (including new arrivals).

Your credit never expires and works toward any fish we have!

Option 3 — Refund (Only If the Above Don’t Fit)

If neither replacement nor credit works best, we can process a refund for the fish only (shipping isn’t refundable in cases of carrier delays, as we can’t control that part). We usually steer folks toward the other options since they give you more bang for your buck, but we’re flexible!

Just reply to us with which option feels right for you—we’ll handle everything from there. Thank you for your understanding, and thank you for choosing Golden State Discus. We’re all about happy customers and thriving discus tanks. If anything feels off, Lynda and the team are always happy to chat!

What type of quarantine process do you use?

Prior to being shipped from Malaysia, the fish undergo a quarantine process. Once they arrive in the USA, we take the fish directly to our facility and start our own quarantine process. After the quarantine process at our facility is complete, we inspect each fish individually to ensure that all fish look amazing and are 100% healthy. Our main goal at Golden State Discus is to ensure that we are only selling the highest quality discus in the USA.

What can I do to prepare my tank for my order?

In order to ensure the best possible environment for your new arrivals, it is best to do a large water change (25%-50%) to remove as much organic matter in the tank as possible. Our discus are kept in pristine water with 0 nitrates, and it’s best to try and mimic that to the best of your ability.

Should I quarantine my fish?

It is highly recommended that you quarantine all new arrivals before placing them into your display tank. The shipping process can place stress on fish, so it is best to have a period of time to observe the fish before they are moved into your main display. A typical quarantine system consists of a 20 to 30-gallon aquarium, cycled bio-active sponge filter, air stone, air pump, heater, and some type of screen or top for the tank. Quarantine tanks require daily 90%-100% water changes in order to keep a proper level of cleanliness. The quarantine tank does best in a quiet room with ambient lighting, preferably insulated and free of drafts.

What If I Need to Cancel an Order?

No worries—life happens! You can cancel anytime before your order ships by emailing lynda@goldenstatediscus.com with your order number.

•  After we’ve started getting things ready? We gently apply a 10% cancellation fee on the order subtotal (not including shipping/taxes). This helps cover the time and care we put into selecting and holding those special discus just for you.

Once the box is sealed and on its way, we switch to the Live Arrival Guarantee instead—no cancellations post-shipping.

We’re all about happy customers and thriving discus here at Golden State Discus. If anything feels off or you have questions, just reach out—Lynda or the team is always happy to chat!
