The White Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) is a popular, captive-bred freshwater aquarium fish known for its entirely pristine, silvery-white body and transparent fins. It is a color variation of the black skirt tetra (or black widow tetra).
Key Characteristics
- Size: This species generally reaches an adult size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.4 cm) in length.
- Appearance: Unlike its wild counterpart which has dark vertical bands, the white skirt tetra is all white, with some individuals showing a reddish-pink flush near the gills. A long-finned variety (known as the Longfin White Skirt Tetra or Hifin White Tetra) with more flowing fins is also common.
- Temperament: They are a generally peaceful, social, and active species, best kept in a school of at least six individuals to help prevent them from nipping the fins of other, slower-moving tank mates.
- Hardiness: White skirt tetras are very robust and adaptable, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
- Diet: As omnivores, they are not picky eaters and thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
- Habitat: They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and subdued lighting.
