The White Calico Redtail Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a popular, peaceful, and hardy freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking coloration.
Physical Appearance
- Coloration: The body has a pale, often snow-white or light pink base, covered with scattered black spots, which gives it a "calico" or "dalmatian" appearance.
- Tail & Fins: The tail and often the dorsal fin feature a vibrant, contrasting red or red-orange coloration.
- Size: They are small, stout-bodied fish. Females are typically larger, reaching up to 2.5–3 inches (6–7 cm), while males are generally smaller.
- Sexual Dimorphism: Males can be identified by their modified, rod-like anal fin (gonopodium), whereas females have a fan-shaped anal fin.
Temperament and Care
The White Calico Redtail Platy is an excellent choice for beginner and experienced aquarists alike due to its ease of care and peaceful nature.
- Behavior: They are active community fish that get along well with other non-aggressive species like tetras, rasboras, and other livebearers.
- Diet: As omnivores, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods and vegetable matter.
- Breeding: They are livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. They breed frequently, and it is recommended to keep a ratio of two to three females per male to prevent the females from being constantly harassed.
