The Corydoras virginiae, also known as the Sangama Cory or Miguelito Cory (C4 classification), is a small, peaceful, and active freshwater catfish native to the Ucayali River Basin in Peru. They are a popular species in the aquarium hobby due to their charming "clownish" behavior and ease of care.

Physical Appearance
  • Size: They typically grow to a maximum length of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5-6 cm).
  • Coloration: They have a pale or tan body with two distinct black or dark vertical bands: one running through the eye and another from the first ray of the dorsal fin down to the mid-body.
  • Distinctive Features: Like all Corydoras, they are "armored catfish," possessing two rows of overlapping bony plates (scutes) instead of scales for protection. They have several pairs of sensitive barbels around their mouth which they use to forage for food in the substrate.

Habitat and Behavior
  • Natural Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit small tributaries, creeks, and flooded forest areas with soft, sandy bottoms and plenty of leaf litter, rocks, and driftwood for cover.
  • Social Behavior: They are highly gregarious schooling fish and thrive when kept in groups of at least five or six of their own kind. Keeping them in groups makes them more secure and likely to be active and visible in the aquarium.
  • Activity: They are bottom-dwellers, often seen constantly sifting through the substrate for food. A notable behavior is their occasional darting to the water's surface for a gulp of atmospheric air, which is normal and helps them supplement their oxygen intake.
