The tiger barb (Puntigrus tetrazona), also known as the Sumatra barb, is a popular, active, and semi-aggressive freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. They are known for their distinctive appearance and lively, schooling behavior.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Tiger barbs have a metallic gold or orange body and are marked by four bold, black vertical stripes, which give them their "tiger" name. Their fins and snout feature splashes of bright orange or red coloration. Selective breeding has also produced color variants like green, albino, and long-finned types.
- Size: They typically grow to an adult size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (7-8 cm) in an aquarium environment.
- Temperament: They are active, boisterous fish with a reputation for being semi-aggressive fin-nippers. This behavior is most often directed at other barbs within their social hierarchy. Keeping them in large groups of at least six or more usually prevents them from harassing other species in a community tank.
- Habitat & Diet: In the wild, they inhabit clear, shallow streams and rivers in Borneo and Sumatra. They are omnivores and will readily eat a variety of commercial fish flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
Due to their energetic nature, tiger barbs are best kept with other fast-moving, robust fish and should be avoided in tanks with slow-moving or long-finned species like angelfish or bettas.
