The Super Red Longfin Bushynose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a popular, captive-bred freshwater catfish known for its vibrant red-orange coloration and distinctive, flowing fins. It is a peaceful, hardy, and manageable fish that is valued in the aquarium hobby for its appearance and algae-eating abilities.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: This fish has a stout, flattened body covered in bony plates. It features a striking, uniform red-orange hue and elegant, elongated fins. Males develop prominent, bristle-like tentacles on their snouts as they mature, while females have much shorter or no bristles.
- Size: Unlike many common plecos that grow very large, the Super Red Longfin stays a manageable size, typically reaching an adult length of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm).
- Temperament: It is generally a peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish, making it an excellent addition to most community aquariums. Males can be slightly territorial with other males of the same species if adequate hiding spots (caves, driftwood) are not provided.
- Diet: While an excellent algae grazer, it is an omnivore and requires a varied diet. Its diet should be supplemented with high-quality vegetable flakes, sinking algae wafers, and fresh vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or shelled peas. Driftwood is also beneficial for its digestion.
- Habitat: It is hardy and adaptable to a range of water conditions. A minimum tank size of 20-30 gallons is recommended, with plenty of aeration, hiding spots, and driftwood to ensure a healthy environment.
