The Super Red Bushynose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a popular, selectively bred freshwater catfish known for its striking, uniform vibrant red-orange coloration and manageable size. It is a peaceful, hardy species valued in the aquarium hobby as an efficient algae eater.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: They exhibit a brilliant, deep orange to bold red color. Males develop prominent, whisker-like appendages (bristles) on their snouts as they mature, while females have much smaller, more subtle bristles, or none at all.
  • Size: Unlike common plecos that can grow very large, the Super Red Bushynose Pleco remains relatively small, typically reaching an adult size of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm).
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and a good addition to most community aquariums. Males can be somewhat territorial toward other plecos of the same species, especially if space and hiding spots are limited.
  • Diet: They are omnivores and excellent algae grazers. In a home aquarium, their diet should be primarily vegetable-based, supplemented with high-quality algae wafers, blanched vegetables (like zucchini and spinach), and occasional meaty foods.
  • Habitat: Naturally a bottom-dweller and primarily nocturnal, they thrive in well-oxygenated tanks with plenty of hiding places, such as caves, rocks, and driftwood. The driftwood also provides essential biofilm and fiber for their digestion.
Due to their hardiness, small size, and vibrant color, they are a favored choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
