The Sterbai Corydoras (Corydoras sterbai) is a popular, peaceful, and active freshwater catfish known for its distinctive appearance and social nature.
Key Features
- Appearance: This species is easily recognizable by its dark brown or black body covered in a striking pattern of white to light tan spots. A key identifying feature is the vibrant golden-orange coloration on its pectoral and ventral fins. They have a compact, armored body and a downturned mouth with sensitive barbels used for foraging in the substrate.
- Size: Adult Sterbai Corydoras typically grow to a size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6–7.5 cm) in an aquarium environment.
- Temperament: They are exceptionally peaceful and social fish, making them an excellent addition to most community tanks. They are active bottom-dwellers that are happiest when kept in groups of at least six individuals to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress.
- Habitat and Care: Native to the Guaporé River basin in Brazil and Bolivia, these fish thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water and prefer a soft substrate like sand or fine, smooth gravel to protect their delicate barbels. They are adaptable to a range of water conditions and can tolerate slightly warmer temperatures than some other Corydoras species, making them suitable tank mates for fish like discus.
- Diet: As omnivores, they require a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. They are not effective algae eaters and must be specifically fed to ensure they receive adequate nutrition.
