GloFish angelfish are genetically modified freshwater fish that possess brilliant, naturally occurring fluorescent proteins, causing them to glow vividly under blue or black LED lighting. They have the elegant, triangular body shape and flowing fins of traditional angelfish but come in bright, unnatural colors.
Appearance
- Glow: The fluorescence is most striking under specific blue LED lights, which makes them appear to "glow" in the dark parts of an aquarium.
- Size: They can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall.
- Markings: As they mature, they may develop additional dark patches, marbling, or speckles, similar to their non-fluorescent counterparts.
Care and Temperament
- Care Needs: Their care requirements are identical to regular angelfish, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced fishkeepers.
- Temperament: They are considered semi-aggressive cichlids. While generally peaceful in a community tank with compatible, medium-to-large-sized species (like tetras, gouramis, or some corydoras catfish), they can be territorial, especially when breeding. They should not be housed with very small fish or shrimp that might be eaten, or with known fin-nippers like some tiger barbs.
- Tank Requirements: They need a minimum 29-gallon tank, preferably one that is tall to accommodate their body shape, with plenty of tall plants and decorations to provide cover.
- Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 8 to 10 years.
GloFish are created by integrating a fluorescent protein gene from marine organisms like jellyfish or coral into their genetic code, a trait that is passed on to their offspring. This process is a result of research initially aimed at developing a way to detect environmental pollution.
