The Sawbwa rasbora (Sawbwa resplendens), also known as the Rummy Nose Rasbora or Asian Rummynose, is a small, peaceful cyprinid fish native to Lake Inle in Myanmar. This species is highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant coloration and active shoaling behavior.
Key Characteristics
- Size: They are a nano fish, reaching a maximum adult length of about 1 to 1.4 inches (2.5 to 3.5 cm).
- Coloration: Mature males feature a shimmering, iridescent silvery-blue body with a striking bright red snout (or "rummy nose") and red tips on their tail fins. Females are less colorful, appearing a duller beige or silver with a dark spot near the anus, and lack the red markings. Their colors become most vibrant when the fish is healthy and settled in a well-planted aquarium with a dark substrate.
- Scales: An interesting feature is that they are considered a scaleless fish, or have very small scales, which requires care with certain medications like those containing copper.
- Behavior: They are social, peaceful, and active fish that must be kept in schools of at least six, but preferably more, to minimize aggression between males and encourage their fascinating, synchronized shoaling behavior.
