The Corydoras paleatus, commonly known as the Salt and pepper corydoras or peppered catfish, is a small, peaceful, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish popular in aquariums. It is native to the lower Paraná River basin and coastal rivers in Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: The fish has a pale olive to tan body with a network of dark green-black spots and markings, giving it a "peppered" look. It has two rows of bony plates (scutes) on its body instead of scales and features two pairs of barbels near its mouth used for foraging.
  • Size: Adults typically reach an average size of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) in length.
  • Behavior: It is a highly social and peaceful fish that thrives when kept in groups of at least five or six individuals. They are active bottom-dwellers, constantly foraging in the substrate for food. An interesting behavior is their ability to dart to the surface to gulp atmospheric oxygen, which is a normal way for them to supplement the oxygen they get from the water. They can also produce sound using their pectoral fins during courtship or when stressed.
  • Habitat: They prefer aquariums with a soft, sandy substrate (to protect their delicate barbels) and plenty of hiding places like plants, driftwood, and rocks.
  • Diet: C. paleatus is an omnivorous scavenger. While it will eat some algae, it requires a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp to thrive.
  • Hardiness: They are a hardy species, making them a good choice for aquarists of all experience levels.
