The rubberlip pleco (Chaetostoma milesi) is a small, peaceful freshwater catfish known for its efficient algae-eating capabilities and distinctive, broad, fleshy lips. Unlike common plecos that grow very large, this species is well-suited for medium-sized home aquariums.
Key Characteristics
- Size: They typically grow to an adult size of 5 to 7 inches (13 to 18 cm).
- Appearance: They have a mottled brownish-gray or sometimes yellowish body with darker spots or bars. Their most notable feature is their broad, rubber-like suckermouth used for grazing on surfaces.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful, making them a great addition to most community tanks. They are bottom-dwellers and are mostly active at night or in dim light.
- Habitat: Native to the Magdalena and Apure River basins in Colombia and Venezuela, they prefer cool, clean, and well-oxygenated water with moderate flow. They appreciate plenty of hiding spots and decor like rocks and driftwood.
- Diet: While excellent algae eaters, they require a supplemental diet of algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched fresh vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach. They are omnivores, but a diet too high in protein can be unhealthy.
