The Red Tuxedo Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a popular, vibrant freshwater fish known for its striking coloration: a bright, deep red-orange body with a prominent, contrasting black or marbled pattern on its midsection, resembling a formal "tuxedo".
Key Features
- Coloration: The fish has a red base color, enhanced by a distinct black marking across the middle of its body. The intensity of the red can be improved with color-enhancing foods.
- "Sword" Tail: Males are easily identified by the elongated, sword-like extension at the bottom of their tail fin, which gives the species its name. Females have a more rounded tail fin and generally grow slightly larger.
- Size & Temperament: They are a medium-sized, active, and generally peaceful fish, typically growing up to 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) in length. While peaceful in a community tank, males may show mild aggression toward each other, so a ratio of two or more females per male is recommended.
- Care Level: The Red Tuxedo Swordtail is a hardy and adaptable species, making it a great choice for beginner aquarists. They are livebearers, meaning they give birth to free-swimming live fry, and are prolific breeders.
- Habitat: They are native to Central America and thrive in planted aquariums with open swimming spaces, as they are active swimmers and can jump if the tank is not covered.
