The Red Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii var. "Red") is a vibrant, freshwater tropical fish known for its striking, saturated red coloration and the distinctive, elongated "sword" on the male's tail fin.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Both sexes share a deep red body color. The male is easily identified by the prominent, sword-like extension on the lower part of his tail (caudal) fin, a feature absent in the female, who has a more rounded tail. The male also has a modified, pointed anal fin called a gonopodium.
- Size: They typically grow to about 4 inches (10 cm) in length.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful and active, making them a popular choice for community aquariums. However, males can be territorial and aggressive toward other males, so a ratio of one male to several females is often recommended.
- Habitat: They are native to rivers and streams in Central America but are hardy and adaptable to various freshwater aquarium conditions.
- Diet: As omnivores, they have a varied diet that includes commercial flake or pellet foods, algae, and supplements like frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms and brine shrimp.
- Reproduction: They are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. They breed readily in captivity.
