The Red Lyretail Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a vibrant, active freshwater fish known for its intense red coloration and distinctive tail fin shape. They are popular, hardy, and generally peaceful community aquarium fish.

Key Physical Features
  • Coloration: The fish has a deep, uniform red body and fins.
  • Tail Fin: Both males and females have u-shaped, elegantly trailing "lyretail" caudal fins that resemble the musical instrument for which they are named.
  • Male's "Sword": The male is particularly notable for a long, sword-shaped extension at the bottom of its tail, which adds to its dramatic appearance and movement. Females lack this "sword" extension.
  • Size: Adult Red Lyretail Swordtails typically grow to an average size of 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm).

Temperament and Habitat
  • Temperament: They are peaceful and social fish, making them suitable for most community tanks. However, male swordtails can be territorial and aggressive toward one another, so it is often recommended to keep them in a group with more females than males to disperse aggression.
  • Activity: They are lively, curious, and active fish that will happily swim in the mid to upper levels of the aquarium. A tank with a secure lid is recommended as they are known to jump.
  • Diet: As omnivores, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, supplemented with vegetable matter or algae wafers.
  • Breeding: They are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live fry instead of laying eggs, and they breed easily in an aquarium environment.
