The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is a very small, peaceful freshwater catfish known for its schooling behavior and for often swimming in the mid-water regions of an aquarium, unlike most other bottom-dwelling Corydoras species. They are a popular choice for nano aquariums and community tanks due to their size and temperament.
Key Characteristics
- Size: They typically reach an adult size of only about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length, with females being slightly larger and rounder than males.
- Appearance: They have a sleek, silvery body with a distinctive solid black horizontal stripe running along their sides from snout to tail. They also possess a second, thinner black line along their lower side.
- Behavior: Pygmy Corydoras are highly social and thrive in groups of at least six, but preferably more (8-10+), as larger schools make them feel more secure and less shy. Their movement is often described as "hovering" or flitting around like small hummingbirds in the mid-water, adding dynamic movement to the tank.
- Habitat: Native to the slow-moving inland waters and tributaries of the Amazon River basin in South America, they prefer a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and a soft, sandy substrate that protects their delicate barbels as they forage for food.
- Diet: They are omnivores that will eat most sinking foods, including high-quality sinking pellets, wafers, and a variety of live or frozen foods like daphnia, cyclops, and baby brine shrimp.
Their peaceful nature and small size make them an ideal companion for other non-aggressive, small fish species like neon tetras, chili rasboras, and even adult dwarf shrimp.
