The Pineapple Swordtail (Xiphophorus hellerii 'Pineapple') is a vibrant, selectively bred freshwater aquarium fish known for its striking coloration and active nature.
Key Characteristics
- Coloration: It features a blend of golden-yellow and orange-red hues, often with reddish or black accents, which gives it its "pineapple" name.
- "Sword" Tail: A prominent feature is the elongated, sword-like extension on the lower part of the caudal (tail) fin, which is present only in males. Females have a more rounded tail and tend to be slightly larger-bodied.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful and social, making it well-suited for community aquariums with other non-aggressive fish. However, male swordtails can become territorial with each other, so it is recommended to keep only one male or several females per male to prevent aggression.
- Size: This species typically grows up to 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) in length, excluding the male's tail extension.
- Hardiness & Care: The Pineapple Swordtail is a hardy and adaptable species, recommended for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
- Breeding: They are livebearers, meaning females give birth to live fry (young fish) instead of laying eggs. They are prolific breeders, and a female can store sperm for several months, leading to frequent births if males and females are housed together.
The Pineapple Swordtail is an omnivore and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods. It is a lively, top-to-mid dwelling fish that brings bright color and energy to an aquarium environment.
