The Phoenix Rasbora (Boraras merah) is a very small, vibrant red-orange fish from Southeast Asia, popular in the aquarium hobby for its peaceful nature and suitability for "nano" tanks.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: True to its name (Merah is Indonesian for "red"), the fish has a striking, fiery red-orange body with dark speckles or blotchy black markings. Males generally display brighter colors than females.
  • Size: It is a micro fish, reaching a maximum adult size of less than 1 inch (around 0.6 to 0.8 inches).
  • Behavior: The Phoenix Rasbora is a peaceful, social, and active schooling fish. It is timid and thrives in groups of at least 6-10 individuals, which also encourages the males to show off their best colors.
  • Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit slow-moving, blackwater streams and peat swamps in Borneo, which are rich in tannins and have soft, acidic water.
  • Diet: They are micropredators, primarily feeding on small insects and zooplankton. In captivity, they accept a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods like daphnia and brine shrimp.
Due to its small size and gentle disposition, it is an excellent tank mate for dwarf shrimp and other non-aggressive, similarly sized fish in a densely planted aquarium with subdued lighting.
