The Panda Corydoras (Corydoras panda) is a small, peaceful, and popular freshwater catfish known for its distinctive black-and-white markings that resemble a giant panda. It is a social, bottom-dwelling species that is an excellent addition to most community aquariums.
Physical Description
- Size: These fish are small, typically growing to an adult size of about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length.
- Coloration: They have a creamy white or pale pink body with three prominent black markings: a patch over their eyes, a spot on their dorsal (top) fin, and a spot at the base of their tail (caudal peduncle).
- Features: Like other Corydoras species, they have an armored body made of overlapping bony plates (scutes) instead of scales and sensitive, whisker-like barbels around their mouth, which they use to forage for food in the substrate.
Habitat and Behavior
- Origin: The Panda Corydoras is native to the Ucayali River system in the upper Amazon basin of Peru, where they inhabit clear, cool, slow-moving streams with soft, sandy bottoms.
- Temperament: They are very peaceful, social fish that thrive in groups. It is recommended to keep them in schools of at least six individuals to encourage their natural behavior.
- Activity: They are active bottom-dwellers, often seen sifting through the substrate in search of food. They will occasionally dart to the surface to gulp air, which is a normal behavior (intestinal respiration).
