The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamya) is a vibrant, active freshwater fish known for its striking coloration and social nature, making it a popular choice for community aquariums.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: The species exhibits sexual dimorphism.
    • Males develop a brilliant, broad, ruby-red horizontal stripe running from head to tail against a shimmering silver or beige body. Their fins may also have a red tint and distinct black markings, especially when in breeding condition.
    • Females are less colorful, typically having a more subdued, plain, silvery-sheen body with fainter black markings on their dorsal fin. They are generally larger and have plumper bodies than the males.
  • Size: Odessa Barbs are a small species, usually growing to about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm) in length.
  • Temperament: They are an energetic, fast-swimming, and generally peaceful schooling fish. They are best kept in groups of at least six individuals to encourage their natural social behavior and prevent them from fin-nipping slower-moving, long-finned tank mates.
  • Habitat/Origin: The fish originate from the Ayeyarwaddy River basin in central Myanmar. They prefer an aquarium with plenty of open swimming space, as well as plants and driftwood for hiding spots.
  • Diet: Odessa Barbs are omnivores and will eagerly eat a variety of foods. A varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms helps maintain their vibrant coloration.
  • Care Level: They are hardy and adaptable, making them a good option for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
