The Melini Corydoras (Corydoras melini), also known as the False Bandit Cory, is a small, peaceful, bottom-dwelling catfish species popular in the aquarium hobby.
Description
- Appearance: The most distinctive feature is a bold, black stripe that runs diagonally from its snout, through the eye, and along the back, extending all the way into the tail. The main body coloration is a light, creamy or yellowish-white. It is often confused with the "true" Bandit Cory (Corydoras metae), but the latter's stripe stops before the tail.
- Size: This species is small, typically growing to a maximum length of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.5 cm).
- Behavior: Corydoras melini are highly social and peaceful fish, thriving in groups of at least six individuals. They are active bottom-dwellers, often seen sifting through the substrate with their sensitive barbels in search of food. They are an excellent addition to community aquariums due to their calm temperament.
- Habitat: Native to the Rio Negro and Rio Orinoco basins in South America, they inhabit slow-moving streams and rivers with soft, sandy substrates.
- Diet: They are omnivores and scavengers, feeding on small invertebrates, plant matter, and detritus in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
