The Longfin Zebra Danio (Danio rerio var. "Longfin") is a popular, hardy, and active freshwater aquarium fish known for its distinctive horizontal stripes and elegant, flowing fins. This captive-bred variation of the standard Zebra Danio is an excellent choice for beginner and experienced aquarists due to its resilience and peaceful community nature.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: They possess the classic zebra pattern of blue/purple and silver/gold horizontal stripes running from gill to tail, but are distinguished by their elongated, delicate, and flowing fins. They typically grow to about 2 to 3 inches in length.
  • Behavior: These are highly social and energetic fish that thrive in groups. They should be kept in schools of at least six individuals to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress or potential fin-nipping of other species. They are active swimmers and will utilize all levels of the aquarium.
  • Hardiness: Longfin Zebra Danios are renowned for their adaptability and hardiness, capable of tolerating a wide range of water conditions. This makes them suitable for new or community tanks.
  • Diet: They are omnivorous and not fussy eaters, readily accepting a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
  • Tank Mates: They are peaceful community fish and get along well with other non-aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, and Corydoras catfish. However, due to their active nature, slow-moving or long-finned tank mates (like bettas or fancy guppies) should be avoided to prevent fin-nipping.
