The Rosy Barb (Pethia conchonius) is a popular and hardy freshwater fish known for its vibrant colors, active nature, and suitability for beginner aquarists.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Males typically exhibit a vivid, rosy-red or claret coloration, especially during breeding season, while females are a duller gold, olive, or yellowish color. Both genders have a large black spot near the tail (caudal peduncle). They have an oval, torpedo-shaped body and can grow up to 4-6 inches in length, though aquarium specimens are often around 4 inches. Long-finned varieties are also available.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful and social, rosy barbs are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least five or six individuals to prevent fin-nipping behavior towards other tank mates. They are lively and enjoy swimming in all areas of the tank.
- Habitat and Diet: Native to fast-flowing streams, rivers, and lakes in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh), they are omnivores that readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. They also appreciate vegetable matter and may graze on algae in the tank.
- Hardiness: They are considered very hardy and adaptable fish, capable of tolerating a range of water conditions, which makes them a great choice for new aquariums or outdoor ponds in warmer climates.
Overall, the rosy barb is an energetic, colorful addition to a community aquarium, provided it has enough space and is kept in a proper school.
