The Longfin Bushynose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a popular, peaceful, and hardy freshwater aquarium fish known for its algae-eating abilities and distinctive long, flowing fins.

Key Characteristics
  • Size: They remain relatively small for plecos, typically growing to an adult size of 6 to 9 inches including their elongated fins.
  • Appearance: They are known for their unique, long, veil-like pectoral and caudal fins, a result of selective breeding. Males develop characteristic, whisker-like appendages (bristles or "bushy noses") on their snouts as they mature, which are much smaller or absent in females. They come in various colors, including common mottled brown/grey, albino, and vibrant lemon yellow.
  • Behavior: They are peaceful, mostly nocturnal bottom-dwellers, spending their time grazing on algae, biofilm, and detritus. They are an excellent addition to most community tanks, though males can be slightly territorial with other males if there aren't enough hiding spots.
  • Diet: While they are excellent algae eaters, they are omnivores and require a varied diet. In addition to tank algae, their diet should be supplemented with high-quality sinking algae wafers, blanched fresh vegetables (like zucchini, cucumber, and spinach), and occasional protein sources such as bloodworms.
  • Habitat: Native to South American rivers, they thrive in aquariums (minimum 30 gallons is recommended) with plenty of hiding spots like caves, rocks, and driftwood, which provides essential fiber for digestion.
