The Leopard Danio (Danio rerio var. frankei or Danio frankei) is a popular, hardy, and active freshwater fish prized for its distinctive spotted pattern. It is a color variant of the widely known Zebra Danio (Danio rerio), and its playful, peaceful nature makes it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists and community tanks.
Description
- Appearance: The fish has a slender body with a metallic, brownish-gold or silver base color covered in numerous small, irregularly shaped dark blue or black spots, resembling a leopard's coat. A popular long-finned variety with flowing fins is also widely available.
- Size: It typically grows to a maximum length of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm).
- Behavior: Leopard Danios are highly active, fast-swimming, and social fish. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six or more individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. They generally swim in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium.
- Habitat: While not found in the wild with this specific coloration (it is a captive-bred variant), its genetic origins are from the freshwaters of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) in streams, ponds, and rice paddies.
Care
Leopard Danios are adaptable and easy to care for. They are omnivores and readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. A securely fitted aquarium lid is essential as they are known to jump.
