The Kribensis cichlid (Pelvicachromis pulcher) is a popular and colorful West African dwarf cichlid known for its relatively peaceful temperament and ease of care, making it suitable for beginner aquarists. 

Appearance
  • Size: Males grow up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length, while females are slightly smaller and more rounded, reaching about 3 inches.
  • Coloration: The fish display a mix of yellow, green, blue, and red colors. A prominent feature is the female's vibrant, cherry-red or purple belly, which intensifies during breeding season. A dark longitudinal stripe runs along the body from the mouth to the tail.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Besides size and belly color, males have longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while females have shorter, rounded fins. 

Habitat and Behavior
  • Origin: They are native to the Niger Delta in West Africa, inhabiting rivers and streams with dense vegetation and plenty of hiding spots.
  • Temperament: While generally peaceful, they can become territorial and aggressive when breeding, especially around their chosen cave dwelling. They are best kept with active, medium-sized fish that do not have long, flowing fins (which they may nip).
  • Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 20 gallons for a pair is recommended, with a soft substrate (sand or fine gravel) for their digging behavior, and plenty of caves, rocks, and live plants for cover.
  • Diet: Kribensis are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, as well as vegetable matter. 

Fun Fact
The scientific name, Pelvicachromis pulcher, roughly translates to "fish with a beautiful belly," a fitting description for the colorful female.
