The Tricolor Koi Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a vibrant, selectively bred freshwater fish known for its distinct patches of red, black, and white or orange coloration, mimicking the patterns of traditional Japanese Koi pond fish.
Key Characteristics
- Coloration: The fish displays a mosaic pattern of white (or silver/transparent), red/orange, and black spots/blotches. The exact pattern varies among individuals, ensuring each fish is unique.
- "Sword" Tail: Males are distinguished by a prominent, elongated, sword-like extension on the lower part of their caudal (tail) fin, which is the source of their common name. Females do not typically have this feature and are generally larger and more heavy-bodied.
- Size: Adults generally grow to an average size of 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10 cm).
- Temperament: They are generally peaceful and active community fish, suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. However, male swordtails can become territorial and aggressive toward each other, so it is recommended to keep only one male per tank or provide a large tank with multiple females per male.
- Habitat and Care: The Tricolor Koi Swordtail is a hardy and adaptable livebearer, meaning it gives birth to live fry. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of open swimming space and a secure lid, as they are known to jump.
- Diet: They are omnivores and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, algae-based pellets, and frozen or freeze-dried supplements like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
Their striking colors and lively nature make them a popular and attractive addition to a freshwater community aquarium.
