The Julii Corydoras (Corydoras julii), also known as the Leopard Catfish, is a small, peaceful, and social freshwater fish native to the Amazon river basin in Brazil. They are popular in aquariums due to their distinctive spotted pattern and helpful bottom-dwelling habits.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The Julii Cory has a light silver or beige body covered in a dense, fine pattern of small black spots, which gives it its "leopard" nickname. It has a dark horizontal line running along its side and a prominent black spot on its dorsal fin. True C. julii can be distinguished from the often-confused Corydoras trilineatus by the pattern on their heads: true Julii Cories have polka-dots, while the false ones have a more reticulated (squiggly dash) pattern.
- Size: They typically reach an adult size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6.5 cm) in length.
- Temperament: They are a very peaceful community fish and are best kept in schools of at least 5-6 individuals to thrive and exhibit natural behavior.
- Diet: As omnivorous bottom-dwellers, they use their sensitive barbels to forage for small invertebrates in the substrate. In an aquarium, they should be fed a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
- Habitat: They are found in slow-moving, shallow waters with sandy or muddy substrates in the wild. In a home aquarium, a soft, sandy substrate is essential to protect their delicate barbels.
