The Harlequin Rasbora (Trigonostigma heteromorpha) is a small, vibrant freshwater fish widely popular in the aquarium hobby for its peaceful nature and schooling behavior.
Physical Appearance
- Coloration The body is typically a shiny reddish-orange or a metallic, rosy-copper color. The fins are often tinted orange, with the tail fin being forked.
- Distinctive Mark Its most notable feature is a prominent, wedge-shaped black patch that begins just below the dorsal fin and extends towards the base of the tail, resembling a harlequin costume pattern.
- Size Adults usually grow to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4-5 cm) in length.
- Sexual Dimorphism Females tend to be slightly larger and have a rounder body shape than males.
Habitat and Behavior
- Origin They are native to the slow-moving, soft, and acidic blackwater streams and peat swamps of Southeast Asia, specifically in Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.
- Temperament Harlequin rasboras are very peaceful, community-oriented fish that thrive when kept in schools of six or more individuals.
- Aquarium Life They are mid-level swimmers and do best in well-planted aquariums that mimic their natural habitat with plenty of vegetation and subdued lighting. They accept a varied omnivorous diet of flakes, pellets, and small live or frozen foods.
