The Green Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a vibrant, selectively bred freshwater fish known for its energetic behavior and striking, iridescent green coloration.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: They have a deep, shimmering green body accented by dark vertical stripes, similar to a tiger's markings. Their fins often display a contrasting bright red or orange hue. Males tend to be more vibrant, especially during breeding.
  • Size: This species typically grows to an adult size of about 2 to 3 inches (5-7.5 cm) in captivity.
  • Temperament: Green Tiger Barbs are active, lively, and considered semi-aggressive. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to minimize their notorious "fin-nipping" behavior towards other species. When kept in sufficient numbers, they usually direct their playful chasing toward each other.
  • Habitat: While the original species is native to Southeast Asia (Sumatra and Borneo), the green variant is a captive-bred morph and not found in the wild. They thrive in aquariums with plenty of live plants and open swimming areas.
Due to their boisterous nature, they are best housed with other fast-moving, sturdy fish like danios and certain tetras, while slow-moving or long-finned tank mates (such as Angelfish or Bettas) should be avoided.
