The Gold Leopard Danio (Danio rerio var. 'frankei') is a popular, active, and hardy freshwater aquarium fish, recognized by its metallic gold body covered in small, bluish-gray spots. It is actually a color variant of the common zebra danio, not a separate species found in the wild with this specific coloration.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The fish has a brownish-gold metallic base color stippled with a unique, irregular, leopard-like spot pattern, distinguishing it from the striped zebra danio. A long-finned variety is also commonly available.
- Size: It typically reaches an adult length of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm).
- Behavior: The gold leopard danio is a peaceful, social, and very active schooling fish that spends most of its time in the top and middle regions of the aquarium. It should be kept in a group of at least six to prevent fin-nipping behavior and encourage natural schooling.
- Care Level: Due to its hardiness and adaptability to a wide range of water conditions, it is an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
- Habitat: While the original species is native to the Ganges region in India and surrounding Southeast Asian countries, the gold leopard color form is a captive-bred variant. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with plenty of open swimming space.
- Diet: It is an omnivore and a very unfussy eater, readily accepting most high-quality flake, frozen, and live foods.
