The Gold Barb (Barbodes semifasciolatus) is a popular, hardy, and active freshwater fish known for its bright, shimmering gold coloration. It is a selectively bred color variant of the wild green Chinese barb and a favorite in community aquariums due to its peaceful nature and ease of care.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: They have an arched back and a vibrant gold body, often with a few subtle dark, vertical bars or patches along their sides. The males may develop red or orange hues on their fins and belly, especially during breeding periods.
- Size: Gold barbs typically grow to an adult size of about 2.5 to 3 inches (6.3 to 7.6 cm).
- Temperament: They are peaceful, schooling fish that are best kept in groups of six or more to prevent fin-nipping behavior and encourage natural schooling. They are active swimmers and spend most of their time in the mid-to-bottom levels of the tank.
- Habitat & Care: Originating from rivers and streams in Southeast Asia, they are quite adaptable and hardy, making them suitable for beginner aquarists. They are omnivores and will readily eat a varied diet of flake food, as well as live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms.
- Life Expectancy: With proper care, gold barbs can live for 5 to 7 years in captivity.
