The pearl danio (Danio albolineatus) is a small, peaceful freshwater fish popular in the aquarium hobby, known for its shimmering, iridescent body that can show hues of pink, purple, or silver.

Key Characteristics
  • Size: They typically grow to a maximum length of about 2 to 2.6 inches (5 to 6.6 cm).
  • Appearance: The fish has an iridescent, pearly sheen and usually features one or two faint, light-colored (yellow/white or blue/red) stripes running along its body. Males are generally slimmer and more brightly colored than females, sometimes displaying a red tint on their underside.
  • Habitat: Native to clear, fast-moving rivers and hill streams in Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Thailand, and Sumatra) with abundant vegetation.
  • Behavior: The pearl danio is a highly active, social, and peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six or more to thrive. They primarily swim in the middle and upper levels of the water column and are known to be enthusiastic jumpers, requiring a secure aquarium lid.
  • Diet: They are omnivores, feeding on insects and zooplankton in the wild, but in captivity, they readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and daphnia.
  • Care Level: Due to their hardiness and adaptability, they are considered a good choice for aquarists of all experience levels.
Note that the pearl danio (Danio albolineatus) is a different species from the visually distinct celestial pearl danio or galaxy rasbora (Danio margaritatus), which is a much smaller fish with a dark blue body covered in bright, pearl-like spots.
