The German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a small, vibrant dwarf cichlid highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its stunning coloration and generally peaceful temperament.
Appearance
- Size: This is a small fish, typically growing to an adult size of only 2 to 3 inches in length.
- Coloration: It features a base color of gold/silver with vivid patches and reflective spots of electric blue across its body and fins. It also has distinctive black markings, including a vertical bar through the eye and a prominent spot on its side, along with a red or orange tint at the tips of its fins.
- Sexual Dimorphism: Males tend to be slightly larger and more colorful, sometimes developing more elongated dorsal fin rays. Females often have a unique pink or rosy patch on their belly, especially when ready to breed, and may have tiny blue spots within their main black side spot, which males lack.
Temperament and Habitat
- Temperament: It is one of the more peaceful cichlid species, making it a good fit for community aquariums with other non-aggressive fish of similar size, such as tetras and rasboras. They are known to form monogamous pairs and can become territorial during breeding periods, aggressively guarding their chosen spawning site.
- Origin and Habitat: Native to the Orinoco River basin in South America (Venezuela and Colombia), they prefer warm, soft, and slightly acidic water conditions. They are sensitive to poor water quality and require a well-established aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, plants, and fine substrate to thrive.
Due to their specific water parameter needs and sensitivity, they are generally recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists.
