The Elegans Corydoras (Corydoras elegans), also known as the Elegant Cory, is a small, peaceful freshwater catfish from the Amazon basin in South America, popular in the aquarium trade.

Key Characteristics
  • Size: They are a relatively small species, typically growing to about 2 to 2.8 inches (5-7 cm) in length.
  • Coloration: Their appearance is variable and changes with sexual activity, but generally features dark double longitudinal stripes or a marbled pattern of greyish-brown markings on an olive to silver background. Males tend to have a more intense and reticulated color pattern than the duller, browner females.
  • Behavior: Unlike most other Corydoras species, which are primarily bottom-dwellers, the Elegans Corydoras is known to swim in the mid-levels of the aquarium more often. They are highly social, peaceful shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six individuals to feel secure and display natural behaviors.
  • Diet: They are omnivores, foraging for food using their sensitive barbels. They require a varied diet of high-quality sinking pellets, as well as live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
  • Habitat: In the wild, they are found in shallow, forested streams with soft substrates like sand or mud. In an aquarium, a soft, sandy substrate is recommended to protect their delicate barbels, along with ample live plants and hiding spots like driftwood and rocks.
