The GloFish Pristella Tetra (Pristella maxillaris) is a peaceful, hardy, schooling fish known for its vibrant, engineered fluorescent colors that glow under blue or black LED lighting. They are a popular and excellent choice for beginner aquarists due to their adaptable nature.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: They are small fish, growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4–5 cm) in length. The non-fluorescent variety is known as the "X-ray Tetra" due to its semi-transparent body. GloFish varieties come in colors such as Electric Green®, Starfire Red®, Sunburst Orange®, and Galactic Purple®.
- Temperament: They are very peaceful and social, making them ideal for most community aquariums. They can be a bit shy, so keeping them in a school of at least six of their own kind helps them feel more secure and display their natural behaviors.
- Diet: As omnivores, they are not picky eaters and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flake or micro-pellet food, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms.
- Care: They are considered easy to care for and are quite hardy, tolerating a wide range of water parameters. A minimum 15-gallon aquarium with plenty of plants and decorations for hiding is recommended for a small group. They are tropical fish and require a heater to maintain water temperatures between approximately 75–80°F (24–27°C).
Their vibrant, hereditary glow is a result of naturally occurring genes from corals and anemones, not injected dye, and the color will not fade.
