The Coral Red Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) is a popular, vibrantly colored freshwater fish known for its intense, uniform coral-red to orange hue and peaceful nature. They are a hardy, active, and social livebearer species that are excellent for beginner aquarists and community tanks.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: This fish is prized for its brilliant, monochromatic red coloration that covers its entire body, sometimes with subtle hints of gold shimmer. It has a compact, slightly elongated body shape, and males can be distinguished by their modified, pointed anal fin (gonopodium).
- Size: Adult Coral Red Platies typically grow to an average maximum size of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.6 cm).
- Temperament: They are very peaceful and social fish, thriving when kept in small groups of three or more. They are active swimmers and co-exist well with other non-aggressive community fish like tetras, guppies, and corydoras.
- Diet: Coral Red Platies are omnivores and are not picky eaters. They accept a varied diet of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. They will also graze on algae and plant matter in the tank.
- Care Level: Considered easy to care for, they are a great choice for beginner fish keepers.
- Habitat: While selectively bred, their wild relatives are native to slow-moving streams and ponds in Central America. They appreciate a well-maintained aquarium with ample swimming space and live plants for cover.
