The Congo tetra (Phenacogrammus interruptus) is a vibrant, medium-sized freshwater fish known for its iridescent, rainbow-like shimmer and elegant, flowing fins, particularly in males. Native to the Congo River basin in Central Africa, it is a popular and generally peaceful species in the aquarium hobby.
Key Characteristics
- Size: Males typically grow up to 3 to 3.5 inches (8-9 cm), while females are slightly smaller.
- Coloration: Both sexes are iridescent, but males are more brightly colored. Their scales shimmer with hues of blue, violet, gold, and red along their body, and they have a distinct dark lateral line.
- Fins: A distinctive feature is their finnage; males develop long, extended, and feathery dorsal and tail fins with a grayish-violet color and white edges.
- Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit streams and pools of the Congo River drainage, preferring areas with dense floating vegetation and driftwood.
- Diet: They are omnivores, feeding on a varied diet of algae, zooplankton, insects, and other small invertebrates.
- Behavior: They are a schooling fish and are most confident and display their best colors when kept in a group of at least six individuals. They are generally peaceful but may nip at the fins of other long-finned fish.
- Lifespan: In captivity, they typically live for 3 to 5 years, and sometimes longer with proper care.
