The Cherry Barb (Puntius titteya or Rohanella titteya) is a small, peaceful, and popular tropical freshwater fish known for its striking coloration, particularly in males. Native to the shaded streams of Sri Lanka, it is a favorite in community aquariums due to its hardy nature and easy care.

Key Characteristics
  • Size: They are a small, slender fish, typically reaching an adult size of about 2 inches (5 cm) in length.
  • Coloration and Gender Differences:
    • Male: Males display a vibrant, deep cherry-red color, which intensifies during breeding season or when competing with other males. They have a more slender, torpedo-shaped body.
    • Female: Females are more of an amber-brown or fawn color with a slight sheen, generally larger and rounder than males, and have a more prominent dark horizontal stripe running from snout to tail.
  • Behavior: Cherry Barbs are a schooling species and are best kept in groups of six or more to encourage their natural behaviors and bring out their best colors. They are generally peaceful but active and can be shy, so they benefit from aquariums with plenty of live plants and hiding spots.
  • Diet: They are omnivores and will readily accept a varied diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or bloodworms.
  • Care Level: They are a hardy and adaptable species, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
