The GloFish Danio is a genetically modified (GM) zebra danio (Danio rerio) that possesses naturally occurring fluorescent protein genes from marine organisms like jellyfish and coral, giving it a vibrant, glowing appearance. They are popular, hardy, and active freshwater aquarium fish.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: GloFish Danios come in bright fluorescent colors, including Starfire Red®, Electric Green®, Sunburst Orange®, Cosmic Blue®, Galactic Purple®, Celestial Yellow®, and Moonrise Pink®. Their colors are a hereditary trait and do not fade. The glow is most prominent under blue LED or black (UV) lights.
- Origin/Development: The fish were originally developed for scientific research to help detect environmental pollutants, not for the pet trade. The gene is integrated into their DNA, so it is passed down to subsequent generations naturally. They are not injected with dye.
- Temperament/Behavior: They are peaceful, social, and very active schooling fish that thrive in groups of five or six or more. They are known for their fast, zippy swimming style and tend to swim in the middle to upper levels of the aquarium.
- Care Level: GloFish Danios are considered easy to care for, making them suitable for beginner aquarists. They have the same care requirements and lifespan (2-4 years) as non-fluorescent zebra danios.
