The celestial pearl danio (Danio margaritatus), also known as the galaxy rasbora however are scientifically classified as a danio, is a vibrant, miniature freshwater fish highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its striking coloration.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The fish has a deep, midnight-blue or greenish-bronze body liberally sprinkled with shimmering, pearly-white or gold spots, resembling a starry sky. The fins are adorned with bright red or orange stripes outlined in black. Males are more vibrant and slimmer, while females have muted tones and a rounder belly.
- Size: This is a small "nano" fish, with adults typically reaching a maximum size of only 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length.
- Habitat and Origin: It is native to small, shallow, heavily vegetated ponds and slow-moving streams in Myanmar and northern Thailand. They prefer environments with plenty of plants and hiding spots.
- Temperament: Generally a peaceful, shoaling fish, it does best when kept in groups of six or more to feel secure. They are timid by nature and can be shy if not provided with enough cover or kept with larger, aggressive tank mates.
- Diet: They are omnivores and micro-predators, feeding on algae, small plants, and tiny invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they readily accept quality micro-pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like baby brine shrimp and daphnia.
Their captivating appearance and small size make them a popular choice for planted aquariums and desktop "nano" tanks.
