The Calico Bushynose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is a unique, smaller freshwater catfish popular in aquariums for its striking, patchy coloration and its efficiency as an algae eater. It is known by various names, including the Calico Bristlenose Pleco or Bushymouth Pleco.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The most distinctive feature is its "calico" or marbled pattern, which consists of patches of brown, black, orange, and cream coloration. As the name suggests, it also develops bristle-like appendages (tentacles) on its snout as it matures, which are more prominent and extensive in males than in females.
- Size: Unlike common plecos that can grow very large, the Calico Bushynose Pleco remains a manageable size, typically reaching an adult length of 4 to 6 inches (10 - 15 cm).
- Temperament: It is a generally peaceful fish suitable for most community aquariums, though males may be slightly territorial with other males of the same species. It is primarily a bottom-dweller and is most active at night, but will often be seen during the day once established in a tank with plenty of hiding places.
- Diet: The Calico Bushynose Pleco is an omnivorous scavenger and an excellent algae eater. Its diet should be primarily vegetable-based, supplemented with high-quality sinking algae wafers, fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, and occasional meaty foods such as bloodworms.
- Habitat: Originating from South America, it thrives in a tank environment with plenty of driftwood, rockwork, and other hiding spots. It also benefits from some wood in the aquarium to graze on the biofilm.
