The Butterfly Pleco (L-52), scientifically known as Dekeyseria picta, is a popular and attractively patterned, mid-sized catfish from South America. It is known for its distinctive flattened body shape and large, "fluttering" pectoral and pelvic fins, which give it its common name.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Juveniles feature bold, evenly-spaced black and white or orangey-colored stripes. As they mature, these patterns become more complex, forming a network of intricate, broken stripes.
- Size: This species is a manageable size for most aquariums, reaching an adult length of about 5 to 6 inches (13-15 cm).
- Temperament: The L-52 is generally a peaceful community fish, though males can be territorial toward other similar species or males if not provided with enough space and hiding spots.
- Habitat: Native to the warm, acidic blackwater river systems of the Orinoco and Atabapo rivers in Colombia and Venezuela, they thrive in aquariums with strong water flow, high oxygenation, and plenty of hiding places among driftwood and rocks.
- Diet: The L-52 is an omnivore and a good algae eater, but algae alone is insufficient for a healthy diet. Their diet should be supplemented with a variety of foods, including high-quality sinking pellets, fresh vegetables (like cucumber or zucchini), and meaty options like frozen bloodworms.
