The Bolivian Ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) is a popular and relatively hardy South American dwarf cichlid known for its peaceful temperament and subtle but vibrant coloration. It is a favored fish in community aquariums, often considered an easier-to-care-for alternative to its more delicate cousin, the German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi).
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: The fish has an elongated, oval body, typically growing up to 3-4 inches (8-10 cm). Its body features a mix of gold, tan, and olive-grey colors, accented by a distinctive black spot on its flank and a black vertical line through the eye. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are often edged with a pink or reddish hue.
- Temperament: Bolivian Rams are generally peaceful and shy, making them suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species like tetras and corydoras catfish. They are known for their "stop-and-go" swimming style and their habit of sifting through the substrate for food.
- Habitat and Behavior: In the wild, they inhabit slow-moving rivers and ponds in the Amazon basin of Bolivia and Brazil, preferring areas with sandy substrate, driftwood, and aquatic vegetation. They are omnivores, feeding on small invertebrates and plant matter.
- Aquarium Care: This species is adaptable to a wide range of water conditions compared to other cichlids, tolerating a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and temperatures between 75° to 82°F (24° to 28°C). A minimum tank size of 20-30 gallons with a fine sand substrate and plenty of hiding places is recommended.
- Breeding: They are monogamous, biparental open-spawners that form strong pair bonds. Both parents actively guard their eggs (usually laid on a flat stone) and protect the free-swimming fry for several days.
