The Blue Phantom Pleco (Hemiancistrus sp. L128) is a visually striking freshwater catfish known for its deep blue to slate-gray body covered in brilliant light blue or white spots. Originating from the fast-flowing, rocky waters of the Orinoco River basin in Colombia and Venezuela, it is a popular but somewhat rare species in the aquarium hobby.

Key Characteristics
  • Appearance: Its most notable feature is its vibrant blue coloration with small, iridescent spots that stand out in an aquarium. It has a streamlined body covered in bony plates instead of scales.
  • Size: This is a medium-sized pleco, typically growing up to 7-8 inches (18-20 cm) in length in captivity.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and shy, the Blue Phantom Pleco is a good addition to most community tanks. However, it can be territorial with other plecos or bottom-dwellers, so ample hiding places like rocks and caves are essential. It is primarily nocturnal, most active during the night.
  • Diet: It is an omnivore. While it will graze on algae and biofilm, it requires a varied diet that includes high-quality sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (like zucchini and cucumber), and protein-rich foods such as bloodworms or mysis shrimp. Wood is not a necessary part of its diet.
  • Habitat Needs: It thrives in aquariums that mimic its natural riverine habitat, preferring clean, highly oxygenated water with moderate to strong current. It is sensitive to poor water quality, requiring frequent water changes.
