Black Angelfish

The Black Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare) is a stunning freshwater cichlid prized for its deep, velvety black coloration and elegant, tall laterally compressed body. Growing up to 6 inches long and 8–10 inches tall, these intelligent fish make a dramatic statement in any aquarium. These fish thrive in tall, well-planted tanks—a minimum of 30 gallons for a single or paired fish, though 40+ gallons is ideal to accommodate their vertical height. They prefer warm, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water maintained between 76–82°F with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Black Angelfish are omnivorous and generally peaceful, though they can become semi-aggressive during breeding or when protecting territory. They accept a varied diet including high-quality flake foods, pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. With proper care, they live 8–12 years, making them a rewarding long-term addition to established aquariums.
