The Albino Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a popular, captive-bred freshwater aquarium fish known for its lively nature and striking appearance. It is an albino variant of the standard Tiger Barb and shares most of its characteristics, except for coloration.
Appearance
- Coloration: The body is a pale, creamy yellow or gold, with faint whitish vertical stripes (unlike the prominent black stripes of the regular Tiger Barb).
- Accents: Fins and the snout are accented with bright red or orange, and the fish typically has red or pink eyes.
- Size: They usually grow to a maximum length of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 cm).
Behavior & Temperament
- Active and Playful: These fish are very energetic, fast-swimming, and social, primarily occupying the middle layers of the aquarium.
- Schooling Fish: They are a schooling species and must be kept in groups of at least six individuals (more is better) to minimize stress and prevent aggressive or "fin-nipping" behavior towards other tank mates.
- Compatibility: Best kept with other robust, fast-moving fish like Danios or Loaches. They should not be housed with slow-moving or long-finned species (e.g., Angelfish, Bettas) as they are known to nip their fins.
Diet
Albino Tiger Barbs are omnivores and not picky eaters. They will readily accept a varied diet, including:
- High-quality flake and pellet food.
- Live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
- Vegetable matter like spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables.
Overall, their hardiness and active nature make them a popular, easy-to-care-for choice for intermediate and beginner aquarists who can provide a suitable environment.
