The albino bushynose pleco (Ancistrus sp.), also known as the albino bristlenose pleco, is a popular freshwater aquarium fish characterized by its unique appearance, small size, and efficient algae-eating habits.
Key Characteristics
- Coloration The most distinguishing feature is the lack of dark pigmentation, resulting in a pale white, yellow, or golden body coloration and the signature pink or red eyes associated with albinism.
- Size Unlike common plecos that can grow very large, the albino bushynose pleco is a dwarf species, typically reaching a manageable adult size of 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm).
- "Bushy Nose" The name comes from the fleshy, whisker-like tentacles (bristles) that develop on their snouts as they mature. These bristles are much larger and more pronounced in males than in females.
- Body Shape They have a flattened, broad head and a body covered in bony plates instead of scales. They possess a sucker-like mouth located on their underside, which they use to cling to surfaces and graze on algae.
- Temperament Generally peaceful and hardy, they make an excellent addition to most community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. They are primarily nocturnal but will often be seen actively grazing during the day if provided with plenty of hiding spots like driftwood and caves.
