The Adolfoi Corydoras (Corydoras adolfoi), also known as Adolfo's Catfish, is a small, peaceful freshwater fish native to the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. It is highly valued in the aquarium hobby for its distinctive coloration.
Physical Appearance
- Size: They typically grow to an average adult size of about 2 to 2.5 inches (5 to 6 cm) in length.
- Coloration: The fish has a light, often creamy white or gold, lower body that changes to a jet black on the upper half. A prominent black stripe runs vertically across the eye. The most striking feature is the bright orange or yellow patch located on its head, just in front of the dorsal fin.
- Other features: Like all Corydoras, they are armored with bony plates instead of scales and have delicate barbels around their mouth used for foraging in the substrate.
Behavior and Habitat
- Temperament: Adolfoi Corydoras are very peaceful and social fish that thrive when kept in groups of at least six individuals.
- Habitat: In the wild, they inhabit slow-moving, soft, acidic blackwater streams with dense vegetation and a fine sand or mud substrate.
- Diet: They are omnivorous bottom-dwellers, feeding on worms, small crustaceans, insects, and plant matter. In aquariums, they accept high-quality sinking pellets, flakes, and frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp.
- Unique Behavior: They have the ability to breathe air intestinally and will occasionally dart to the surface for a gulp of air, which is an adaptation to low-oxygen environments.
